After reading this article, you would think that Cambodia is probably the most conservative country in Asia.
A recent viral report discussed how the Ministry of Culture in Cambodia banned Denny Kwan from getting any projects in the entertainment industry because she was deemed "too sexy."
The ministry urged film studios to refrain from hiring the 24-year-old actress because of the way she dresses.
Kwan, who has already achieved local fame due to her movies, was disappointed when the Cambodian Culture and Fine Arts Ministry asked her to appear before them. They claimed that she violated some of their ethical codes that were created to preserve the country’s arts, culture, tradition, and identity.
The ministry claimed that they enforced the ban because Kwan failed to fulfill her written promise of not wearing sexy clothes. The arrangement was made in May of last year, according to the Daily Mail.
Kwan reacted to her punishment by claiming that there are other actresses who dress even sexier than she does. She said that the ban was inappropriate because she was just expressing herself.
The situation prompted many women’s rights groups to voice out their opinion. They believe that this is a clear example of discrimination against women. Some of these groups claimed that there is no law that prohibits people from wearing whatever they want. They urged the ministry to review their decision.
