The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDDRMC) has raised a RED alert in Sarangani after the province was hit by a 7.2 earthquake today (Saturday, April 29, 2017) at 8 a.m.
"Based on tsunami wave models and early tide gauge records of the tsunami in the Philippine Sea, coastal areas in Philippine provinces fronting the Celebes Sea are expected to experience wave heights of less than one meter above the normal tide levels," Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) stated.
The province's Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said that they recorded 7 aftershocks. Residents living in coastal areas have already been ordered to evacuate in case of a tsunami.
As of now, there are no reports of casualties but response teams are on the move to help residents affected by the quake.
Here are the affected areas:
Some areas in Davao Occidental
Some areas in South Cotabato
Paalimbag, Sultan Kudarat
Some areas in the Sarangani Province
Cagayan De Oro City
Of course, with the high-intensity quake, there was damage to infrastructure and the like.
The government asked the province's residents to stay calm and remain vigilant in order to make sure that much-needed assistance can come to them.
We urge everyone to prepare for any calamity that might strike. Stay safe, everyone!
