ABS-CBN News reported that Viacom, Nickelodeon's parent network, has plans to open a 400-hectare underwater theme park in Palawan, which would showcase marine life and feature restaurants and lounges six meters below sea level.
DZMM Teleradyo released a statement on Twitter about DENR Secretary Gina Lopez's opinion on the issue.
According to the secretary, "I will never allow the corals to be harmed, that's what we have, that's our wealth. You cant [sic] kill the corals for a theme park, no way."
She said that she was not aware of any application from Nickelodeon and added, "We will not allow anything that will damage the environment. No amount of money is worth the well-being of our farmers and fishermen."
Even before Lopez was appointed as the head of DENR, she was already active in protecting the environment. Her causes included reviving the polluted Pasig River and protecting the La Mesa Watershed, which is Philippines' last forest reserve.
She has been involved in investigations on the mining industry and has cited at least 20 companies for violating safety regulations, threatening them with possible suspension.
Different environmental groups have already launched a signature campaign in order to urge the network and local government officials to disapprove plans for the theme park.
