Former beauty queen and TV personality Charlene Gonzales thanked Miss Universe Sushmita Sen for the opportunity the showcase our Filipino style of hospitality when the country hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1994.
In a televised interview, Miss Sen remembered when Charlene lent her a pair of earrings during the coronation night.
Sen had lost her luggage which contained her earrings. The Indian beauty was on the verge of tears when Miss Philippines Charlene introduced herself and lent her a pair of earrings that matches with her gown.
When Sen was crowned as Miss Universe 1994, she was wearing the earrings that Charlene gave her. She was the first Indian to win Miss Universe.
Charlene was proud to represent herself as the Philippines' candidate as well as the entire country.
In a statement, Gonzales said, “So again, let me thank you Sushmita for giving me the special opportunity to genuinely share the Filipino traits of hospitality, love, generosity and kindness to you and our fellow candidates”
“That for me was one of the best gifts and fulfillment that I received from the Miss Universe experience and I know if given the chance, any Filipino or Filipina would do the same to extend a helping hand,” she added.
The former host of “The Buzz” then praised Sen and welcomed her back to the Philippines. This year Sen returns to our shores as a judge for the upcoming 65th Miss Universe pageant.
“You are a beautiful person inside and out. We welcome you back with open arms and we are genuinely happy you are in Manila. I look forward to the day when we will meet again. You will always have a special place in my heart and in the hearts of the Filipinos. Mahal ka namin,” Gonzales said.
Charlene represented the Philippines in 1994 where she was one of the Top 6 finalists. She also won the Best National Costume award.
The 65th Miss Universe coronation will air live on ABS-CBN on January 30, 2017 Monday 8 a.m. (Manila time)
