It seems like the war between the Catholic Church and President Rodrigo Duterte is far from over as Bishop Teodoro Bacani challenged the President by promising to give him PHP 10 million if he can prove his accusation that the bishop has 'two wives'.
The President made the bold pronouncement last Tuesday, during the commemoration of the Mamasapano massacre. He was defending his administration's war against drugs which the Catholic Church has been constantly condemning due to the rampant number of extrajudicial killings that came along with it.
Duterte then called the church “full of sh*t" and even accused them of corruption and hypocrisy. Furthermore, the President also challenged the country's Catholic Church officials to resign and that he would do the same if they did.
Bishop Bacani challenged the President to prove his accusation and stated in an interview with Radio Veritas: “Unang-una, saan nakuha ng presidente ‘yun?
The bishop also reminded the former Davao city mayor to not spread lies and speak ill of others and to reflect on the old adage "the truth will set you free."
Bacani said.
He also clarified the Catholic Church's positive support for the current administration’s anti-illegal drugs campaign but reiterated that they did not agree with the way they were handling it.
