Former Spiderman star, Andrew Garfield has taken on a whole new level in his acting career as he starred in the upcoming movie Silent. The movie is a narration of the real-life story of Desmond Doss, a US Army Medic during the World War II who stood firm in his faith and refused to use arms and kill in the battle of Okinawa.
According to Andrew, it was Doss' unwavering faith which convinced him to do the movie."One of the main reasons I was drawn to doing it and to playing him was his awareness of his own ego and humanity, but his faith was the strongest part of him. He was empty enough to be in touch with spirit, to be in touch with his own deep inner-self, to be in touch with God, "Andrew shared in an interview.
"He managed to transcend or get underneath the pervading cultural attitudes through his faith and become a symbol of, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' -- of, 'I will sacrifice myself for my brother," he added.
According to him, taking on the role has made him deeply understand the commitment and faith displayed by Doss. As part of the preparation, he went to a Jesuit retreat together with his co-actor Adam Driver, where they learned Jesuit values and lived like Jesuits for a few days. "He gave me spiritual direction as if I were a Jesuit in training,"
“I was filled up with all this information and all this longing to spread the teachings of Christ, which I truly started to adore,” he shared, noting that it has been a very personal journey for him.
"I underwent this spiritually transformative process that St. Ignatius created- a retreat where you meditate and imaginatively walk with Jesus through his life, from birth to resurrection. My experience was very personal. Hopefully, we're dying on the cross every day and being resurrected in a truer way every day. That's the idea, for me - the old self being shed in order for the truer self to emerge,"he added.
Although he is disclaiming that he is now a Christian, Andrew shared that Jesus' teachings touched his life. "I'm a believer with some doubts. But the doubts push me to find a purer sense of the other, a purer sense, if you want, of the word 'God.'"
