Jessie Tendayi works as a food service aide at a local children's hospital in Chicago. She migrated from Zimbabwe to Chicago and has been staying there for 19 years.
She is fond of children, especially children who are in need or have medical conditions, since she has no children of her own.
Every year, she prepares a gift-giving activity for these children. She started in 2009, when she gave out 100 toys for different children. This year is set to be her biggest. She saved up her salary for a year and bought 1,300 toys.
She distributed her gifts to the children at Advocate Children’s Hospital and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. All the hospitals’ staff members were surprised at how caring and dedicated she was to providing gifts for these children who were strangers to her.
Jessie treats them as her own children and found joy from seeing their happy faces and genuine appreciation from her kind and selfless deed.
"Why do I do it? God put it in my heart,” Tendayi said.
“One day I was watching TV and I saw children in need. I asked myself, 'What should I do for them to calm down what they are going through?’ So I started saving my money to make sure the children had something to play with while they are sick, so they can forget their pain.” She added.
Jessie proved that Christmas is a season of happiness and that making others happy is a priceless gift that you can give to yourself and to the world.
