Aside from the fact that it was Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach who took home the crown last year for Miss Universe, that particular pageant trended worldwide because of the controversial mistake on the announcement of winners. Roughly a year after the incident, Steve Harvey, the one who hosted the show, finally revealed the real story behind his wrong announcement.

“It was crazy, man, because I’m a smart guy. You know, I can read,” he said in an interview with Jimmy Fallon. He continues saying:  “I read the teleprompter, but the guy in my ear said, ‘Read the next name.’ Now the teleprompter just said, ‘And the new 2015 Miss Universe is’ and next he said, ‘Read the next name. Now. Now.’ I said, ‘Miss Colombia.’ The crowd goes crazy. He goes, ‘Great job, Steve.'”

But upon exiting to the backstage, expletives started to get exchanged by the frantic crew in his ear. They noted: “We said the wrong name.” The crew then decided to just settle it with the media the following day. However, Steve Harvey knew he had to do something.

“No man, I’m gonna go do it now,”

“It was the most gut-wrenching walk I’ve ever had in my life.”

“I was brought up that way, man, to kinda just face whatever it is, so I went out there and dealt with it,”

“I made the decision to go back out there because my father was in my ear. That Sunday school teacher and that coal miner were in my ear, saying, ‘Do what you are supposed to do. Stand up.’ So, I went out there and took the bullet.”
