A fiery crater has been burning in the middle of a desert for decades, and experts dubbed it as the ‘door to hell.’
A natural gas field has been on fire since 1971 in Derweze, Turkmenistan. Soviet engineers found the area in 1971 and thought that it has deposits of oil. They started assessing the amount of oil it could produce by digging it. Unfortunately, the area is producing natural gas instead. The area which the engineers have dug engineers eventually collapsed and formed a deep crater.
Geologists then decided to set the crater on fire to prevent methane gas from spreading. They thought that the fire will last for weeks but to their surprise, it is still on fire for four decades.
The president of Turkmenistan ordered to close the hole in 2010 to prevent it from further damaging other developing natural gas sites near the area.
Meanwhile, the crater has been featured in one of the episodes of National Geographic Channel on July 16, 2014.
