In a speech during Sen. Manny Pacquiao's birthday celebration in General Santos City, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte claimed that 5 to 6 people will be put to the death row daily if the capital punishment will be reimposed.
"Eh sana sabihin na, eh bakit hindi hingiin ni Duterte iyang death penalty. Eh may death penalty wala namang nangyari noon. Eh anak ka ng--ibalik mo sa akin iyan, ako ang mag... araw-arawin ko iyan, lima o anim. Totoo. Kaya ko hinihingi kasi talagang hihiritan kita," the President said to quote from GMA News.
Duterte earlier expressed interest in reimposing capital punishment as part of his war campaign against illegal drugs. He had pushed the Congress to restore death penalty and he wanted to execute it "by public hanging". However, the lawmakers proposed that the death penalty will be carried out through lethal injection.
Meanwhile, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez filed House Bill 01 which seeks reimposition of the death penalty as punishment for heinous crimes such as treason, plunder, rape, murder, carnapping and involvement on illegal drugs.
This bill was approved last December 7 at the committee level.
