Yang Liwei was the first Chinaman to fly in outer space. He was on board the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft back in October 16, 2003 and made China the third country to send an astronaut out to space, after Russia and the United States.
However, the reason why Yang Liwei made noise on social media was because he claims to have heard a strange noise which resembles a knock during his 212-hour mission.
“A non-causal situation I have met in space is a knock that appeared from time to time. It neither came from outside nor inside the spaceship, but sounded like someone is knocking the body of the spaceship just as knocking an iron bucket with a wooden hammer.” he said.
He further explained that when he tried to figure out where the sound was coming from he found nothing. Even more chilling was when Shenzou 6 and 7 flew to space in 2005 and 2008 respectively, astronauts aboard the ships heard the same sound.
The first explanation that experts posed was the sound was caused by random debris striking the ship. Another theory is that the spacecraft might be expanding and contracting, which is caused by the unstable temperature in space.
The earliest astronauts who reported strange sounds in outer space were from the Apollo 10 crew who journeyed to Moon back in May 1969. They described it as a whistling sound and ruled out that it was some kind of radio interference.
However, up to this day, no clear scientific explanation has identified the cause of the strange sounds. Fortunately, the astronauts have all come back safely and carried out their missions successfully.
