Senator De Lima's Private Life As Subject Of Probe: 'As a woman, it breaks my heart'

Senator Leila De Lima claims that she was heartbroken due to Ronnie Dayan’s statements at the House of the Committee on Justice.

During the televised probe on the New Bilibid Drug illegal trade, Dayan disclosed how he received money from suspected drug lord Kerwin Espinosa. He said that he did this for De Lima several times.

Specifically, Dayan said that money was handed over to him by Espinosa for De Lima once in August 2014, once in October 2014 and thrice in November.

Dayan claimed that he did not know Espinosa was a drug lord, which the House Committee believed was Dayan’s attempt to absolve himself of guilt.

When asked about their affair, Dayan admitted that it lasted for 7 years.

De Lima said that "As a woman, it breaks my heart that my private life and personal relationship have become subject of the public and Congress' ridicule.”

She also stated that a woman should never be disrespected by any man with whom she had a relationship.

"No woman, whoever or whatever she may be, whether a sitting senator or a humble secretary, deserves to be betrayed, to be treated with so much disrespect and without dignity, before the public eye, by any man she is with or had a relationship with," De Lima said.

De Lima was also saddened because the people she “trusted fell into the trap of power, deceit, fear and intimidation that they found it necessary to lie and twist truths to save themselves.”

She also said that there are inconsistencies in the witnesses’ testimonies and that the inquiry done by the House Committee was a “desperate attempt” to make her seem corrupt.

"The glaring inconsistencies of statements from all "witnesses" in the House inquiry to this Bilibid Prison drug trade conspiracy speak for itself," De Lima said.
