The Philippines has truly made a name for itself as a land of stunning beauties. Recently, a Filipina model was cast in a Victoria's Secret ad.
Janine Tugonon represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe 2010 and won first runner-up. But things were just getting started from there.
She was studying Pharmacy when she joined her very first pageant, Miss Pharmacy, in her school. Things quickly escalated from there as she won the Binibing Pilipinas as Miss Universe - Philippines.
Her first time being in the US was special for her, as she competed for the title of Miss Universe. After seeing an advertisement for the New York Film Academy, she immediately made arrangements to go back to the US. She took it as a sign that it was time for her to achieve her dreams of superstardom.
She received her green card and got into a modelling agency in Los Angeles. The first thing she asked was:
'Do you send girls to Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show? They responded with ‘No, they’re booked in New York.’ So that’s when I decided I’m going to New York. If I’m going to pursue modeling, I want to be the best in it.' Tugonon said.
So she moved to New York. After a series of rejections, which she accepted as a part of the process, she got accepted into Victoria's Secret’s sister company, PINK, and made history by being the first ever Filipina to be included in a Victoria's Secret ad campaign.
Amid her success, she admits that she feels pressured sometimes and said:
“It’s also king of tough sometimes because you know, especially for young girls, they look at you and a lot of people are messaging me: ‘Oh, you inspire me so much!’
She believes that this only just the beginning.
